Avoid Belize City? Help! ...

Hi!

I was planning to stay in Belize City so that I can go up to Altun Ha the following day, and then take an early morning bus the day after to Orange Walk to take the tour to Lamanai.

However, after seeing the comments from others regarding Belize City, I now want to avoid Belize City at all costs if possible. I'm landing in Belize City in the afternoon. Can anybody give me any hints/advice on how I can still see Altun Ha and get to Orange Walk without having to stay in Belize City? Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
