If I were you, I would be more worried about having to stay in Orange Walk instead of Belize City. The poverty level is lower in Orange Walk, and it is quite diverse from the rest of Belize. There were alot of Chinese. I would recommend going ahead and making the trec to San Ignacio, if you are worried about crime stay home because, more of it happens here than it happens there. The only difference in the statistics is that Belize is smaller of course. Altan Ha was okay to look at, but not the best. Lamani is a good choice.Be just as careful and observant as you would in a large city in the USA. Have fun.
