Suspended high above the Macal River, the Hawksworth Bridge is the only drivable suspension bridge in Belize.

Hawksworth BridgeImported from Middlesbrough, England and erected in 1949 the single lane of the Hawksworth bridge connects the twin towns of Santa Elena and San Ignacio in the Cayo district.

Another wooden bridge upstream is only a few feet above the river and is normally used for westbound traffic from the Western Highway into San Ignacio.   This location is the starting point for the annual 4-day La Ruta Maya Canoe Race from Cayo to Belize City on the long weekend that commemorates Baron Bliss Day in early March.
