Mexican Ambassador responds to Belizean's detention in Chetumal - Courtesy of B.C.B
The Mexican Ambassador has responded to an incident in which Belizean businessman Luis Leslie was detained and fined by Mexican authorities in Chetumal for failing to declare 32 thousand dollars in post-dated cheques. Ambassador Enrique Hubbard Urrea told BCB News today that Luis Leslie's four hour detention at the border on Thursday was an unfortunate incident, but that his examination of the case shows that there was no impropriety on the part of Mexican officials. The Ambassador says the border authorities acted within the Mexican law. The Ambassador stated that Leslie did not consider the documents as currency when he failed to declare the cheques, and under Mexican law they must declared before the person crossing the border stops at the red light, not after. The Ambassador told BCB News that the Belizean public needs to become aware of Mexican laws and that the embassy will be taking on the task of distributing the information to travelers.

Two women who were hospitalized following a traffic accident over the weekend were treated and released from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The accident reportedly happened on the Hummingbird Highway early Sunday morning. Reports from the hospital indicate that the women, Claudia Ramirez of Orange Walk and Martha Andrews of Unitedville were released yesterday. X-rays of the women's injuries were taken and they were treated. Both women along with six other passengers were travelling from Santa Martha Village towards Belmopan in a van driven by 34-year-old Dufemio Cruz. One of the passengers allegedly fell on Cruz's side, leaned on his arm and he lost control of the vehicle. He says the van ran off the road and overturned. Cruz and the six other passengers sustained minor injuries.
