Dickie Bradley Jr. charged with theft - Courtesy of B.C.B
Twenty six-year-old customs officer, Richard "Dickie" Bradley Jr., charged with 8 counts of theft, appeared before Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord this morning. Bradley is being charged for allegedly misappropriating an undisclosed amount of money from Santiago Castillo during the last four months of last year. Santiago Castillo Limited has declined to comment on the amount of money involved, but stresses that Bradley was at no time an employee of the company. Dickie Bradley Jr. was offered bail and met a five thousand-dollar bail and a surety of the same amount. He is to reappear at the Belize City Magistrate's Court on November 28.
Twelve of Belize's outstanding musicians will be honoured at the Third Annual Outstanding Artists' Awards in November. They are Governor General Sir Colville Young, Francis Reneau, Florencio Mes, Theodore Burrowes, Felipe Moralez, Gerald "Lord" Rhaburn (M.B.E), Winfred Peters (M.B.E), and Helen Craig. Posthumous honourees are Floss Cassasola, George "Pete" Matthews, Isabel Flores and Jesus "Chu-Chin" Acosta. The week of activities next month will include lectures, concerts and workshops with some of the honourees.

Belizeans are invited to apply for a scholarship to further their studies in Mexico. The Mexican government is offering the scholarships to pursue professional studies at a degree and post-graduate levels. Scholarships are for a Master's Degree in public health, administration of health services and in health science. There is also a scholarship available for a Doctorate in public health science. Interested persons may obtain application forms from the Institute of Cooperation and Culture Mexico-Belize. The completed forms are due no later than January 10th, 1998. Candidates applying should have a sound knowledge of the Spanish language.
Belize to attend Miss Teen International Pageant - Courtesy of B.C.B
Belize will have representation at the "Miss Teen International" pageant in Costa Rica scheduled for October 11th. Eighteen year old Elvia Vega, the recently crowned Miss Belize 1997/98 leaves Belize today to take part in that contest which brings together 40 young women from all over the world. A release from pageant officials says participants will be distributing gifts to the underprivileged children, touring the coastline and visiting Costa Rica's ecotourist destinations. Miss Belize, Elvia Vega, will return to Belize on October 12th for the Pan-American festivities in northern Belize.

Belize's king of brukdown, Wilfred Peters has released his new album: "Weh Mi Lova Deh". Mr. Peters and his Boom and Chime Band have been playing and living their brukdown music for over three decades. According to Mr. Peters, "Weh Mi Lova Deh" features 13 previously unreleased songs including "Gial Go Home" and "You May Leave Belize." Gil Abarbanel and Ivan Duran produced "Weh mi lova deh" at Diamond Studios in Belize City by engineer Zener Diode. It is available on compact disc and cassette at record stores and gift shops countrywide.

The winners of a speech competition held on Youth Development Day September 30th have been announced. A press release issued by the Belize Information Service today says Tylone Tillett from Edward P. Yorke High won first place and Zeidi Leiva from Muffles College took second place. Third place went to Vanessa Gongora from Wesley College. Tillett won as his prize a word processor with monitor, donated by Fultec. Zeidi received a Brother typewriter with screen, donated by Price and Company and Gongora received a Brother one-line typewriter, donated by the Youth Development Department. The Youth Development Department held the speech competition.
