Central American Fisheries representatives in Belize - Courtesy of B.C.B

Twenty-five representatives from Central American countries are in Belize for the 13th meeting of Ministers of the Latin American Organization for Fisheries Development. Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Russell Garcia opened the meeting this morning. He stated that Belize needs to be aware of the high technology to improve its fisheries industry. Participating countries include Mexico, Guatemala, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Panama, Nicaragua, Peru and Bolivia.

World AIDS Weeks opens - Courtesy of B.C.B

Activities leading up to World AIDS Day started yesterday with the official opening of the week and the distribution of red ribbons to school children in Belize city. A Memorial Day service was also held yesterday and food collected at all the major grocers for families affected by AIDS. Tomorrow is the last day for food collection. The joint United Nations Programme on AIDS/HIV (UNAIDS) has developed the 1997 World Aids Campaign under the theme "Children Living in a World with Aids". UNAIDS says the aim of the campaign is to minimize the epidemic's impact on children, families and the community.

Belize Arts Council honors Sir Colville Young & Helen Craig - Courtesy of B.C.B

The Belize Arts Council's week of performances to recognize Belize's outstanding musicians continues tonight in Belize City with tribute to Sir Colville Young and Helen Craig. The nightly performances are leading up to Outstanding Artist Awards Night on Saturday. Awards will also go to the late Isabel Flores Floss Cassasola, Jesus "Chuchin" Acosta, and George "Pete" Matthews.

Man drowns after boat capsizes - Courtesy of B.C.B

A man allegedly drowned after his boat capsized at sea yesterday evening. Twenty year old Gregory Smith of Central American Boulevard told police that around 5 p.m, he and Kenny Ferguson went fishing at sea behind the Port Authority. About half mile out, Smith said that bad weather caused the boat to capsize and Ferguson disappeared under the water. Ferguson never resurfaced however smith says he was able to swim ashore. A search for the body is being conducted by police and family members.
